The Clash asked this question back in 1982.
It was a big hit too. It made it to #1 on the charts in the UK, where the British band was formed.
I’m not sure Jesus ever asked this question of His disciples, but He certainly answered it when He said:
“It is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come.” (John 16.7, NLT)
That seems so unbelievable to me. Really Jesus? It’s better that you leave? I mean… you’re Jesus.
In fact, Jesus was clearing the way for the Advocate, the Friend, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit to come.
- In the Old Testament God’s promise to His people was I will be with you wherever you go.
- During the life of Jesus, His promise was very clearly I am among you.
- Now, since Jesus’ ascension, His promise I am living within of you.
“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.” (Romans 8.11, NLT)
What an incredible promise.
The subtlety between the three promises is small, yet the significance is so important.
No matter what we face in this life, we know that God’s Spirit is alive and at work within us, helping us through it.
“God’s Spirit is in you and is more powerful than the one that is in the world.” (1 John 4.4, CEV)
Maybe Jesus was right when He said it’s better that I go.
Maybe The Clash finally have an answer to the question they’ve been asking the last 30 years.
